Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising has evolved far beyond its origins as a simple online marketing tool. It is now an integral component of the Ambient Advertising Ecosystem, seamlessly integrated into smart surfaces, augmented reality interfaces, and public spaces. This evolution has been driven by the advent of Contextual Reality, where every interaction becomes a potential advertising touchpoint.

The ubiquity of PPC advertising has sparked significant cultural backlash, with the Authentic Experience Movement and Digital Detox Retreats gaining popularity as responses. Debates around Attention Rights and the development of Personal Attention Marketplaces have become central to discussions about PPC advertising. Politically, the Global Advertising Transparency Initiative and the concept of Information Equity have impacted the use of PPC in campaigns and public information. Ethical concerns about consent and manipulation have led to the Subconscious Click Protection Act and the push for the Right to Unfiltered Experience. In response, human-centric alternatives like the Slow Click Movement and Artisanal Advertising Collectives have emerged, offering more mindful and intentional advertising experiences.

How does WhatIFpedia work?

WhatIFpedia uses Anthropic's Claude 3.5 AI model on the back-end to simulate articles about future possibilities. As it creates each article, the AI model is prompted to consider IFTF's original forecasts on generative AI, and to play out those forecasts in a fictional simulation of the world ten years from now. These articles should not be taken as predictions of future states, but as provocations of future possibility to help stimulate your thinking about the future strategies of your organizations and communities. Once a topic has been simulated, that article will be made available for any future WhatIFpedia users who search for similar subjects.
